Last year I ran my first marathon in Milwaukee. Running a marathon was something I had always wanted to do, but this year will be different.

This past December I received some extremely sad news when I got word that my friend had unexpectedly passed away. Pierce Cordle was one of a kind. He lit up a room when he walked in, and his presence was always felt - whether it was his booming laugh or a witty remark, he was the center of it all.

I first met Pierce in band while at Marquette University. I got to know him pretty quickly, though jazz band, traveling to New York and D.C. for pep band, and living on the same floor that first year. It didn't take long for me to realize that Pierce was someone special. His honesty, his love for playing music (and listening - to Owl City especially), his sense of humor, his strong desire to make others around him laugh and be happy, and his truly big heart - are some of the biggest ways I will remember Pierce. And just a few of the reasons why I am running in honor of Pierce on October 8th.

Pierce aspired to become a doctor and alongside his desire to help others, had a passion for the medical profession. Please consider donating to the Lurie Children's Hospital race team, something I know would have meant a lot to Pierce. Your donation of any size would be greatly appreciated and would make a difference in the lives of the more than 173,000 patients treated at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago each year. Support my efforts for the 2017 Lurie Children's Marathon Team by making a gift today. Every dollar raised means a brighter and healthier future for our children.

Here are just a few ways your donations could help:

$35 can provide a comfort item for a premature infant to ensure the smallest and most fragile babies heal and grow faster.

$60 can help provide inpatient entertainment and distractions to help patients reduce stress and have fun while undergoing treatment.

$120 can help provide small lab supplies for one of the hospital’s clinical trials to ensure our children have access to the latest treatments and therapies.

$240 can help provide supplies for the Lurie Children’s classroom so that children in the hospital can continue their education.

All donations are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by Lurie Children’s Foundation.

On behalf of the patients and families of Lurie Children’s, thank you for your support!
