Run for Gus 2018

Kyler's Super Troopers

On October 16, 2013, a mass was discovered in Kyler’s brain. A mere 24 hours later after entering the ER at Lurie Children’s hospital, Kyler was rushed into emergency surgery to have the tumor removed. His cancer was rare, a high grade brain tumor with no clear diagnosis. Kyler endured 8 months of chemotherapy like a champ. Unfortunately, the cancer was more advanced than the current treament options. Kyler passed away at home on November 21, 2014. Kyler lived every day of his short 3 years to the fullest.

Kyler brought so much joy into our lives everyday. His smile was contagious, his laugh was infectious and those cheeks! Kyler loved to eat the air, he loved to lift his head upwards and feel the rain and snow on his face, and he loved digging in the dirt. The kid loved life, all the simple things. He was a happy little boy, always, before cancer and even throughout. He never complained, even with all that he had endured. He just rolled with it, he adapted, he made the best of every and any situation. Kyler taught us how to be brave, how to love more, how to enjoy each moment. Kyler was a warrior, he was our super trooper.

We run/walk in his honor, to keep his memory alive, and to continue to help find a cure for pediatric brain cancer.

On July 26 2018, we will participate in the Young Associates Board’s (YAB) 16th annual Run for Gus 5K Run/1 Mile Walk, which raises funds to advance research and support services at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago for patients with brain tumors.

Pediatric brain tumors are the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children and are fatal for almost half of those diagnosed. Yet, only $1 million is given annually for pediatric brain tumor research by government agencies. YAB has raised more than $1.5 million to date to further this lifesaving cause.

Please support our efforts by making a gift today! Any amount will make a difference, and all donations are tax-deductible and will be acknowledged by Lurie Children’s Foundation.

With your help, more children battling brain tumors can receive the best healthcare possible and the opportunity to reach their greatest potential. Thank you!
