Ways to participate
There are two ways to step up on your own in a safe, socially distanced way:
- Virtual Stepper
Challenge yourself to complete 10,000 steps per day for the entire month of January. We have a goal to collectively complete 465 million steps, or enough to make it all the way to the moon!
- Virtual Climber
Challenge yourself to climb 80 flights of stairs, the same as the Aon Center where the event is traditionally held, in as long a timeframe as you see fit. This could be one hour or over the whole month.
How can I fundraise?
Participants are encouraged to download the Step Up for Kids app. This makes it very easy to use your personal fundraising web page to reach out to your contacts.
You can download the app at the links above.
How to count steps?
Participants are encouraged to download the Step Up for Kids app. This will automatically track your steps.
The app uses your GPS, so if you are getting steps on a treadmill or other exercise equipment, or if your personal fitness tracker is giving a different step reading, you can add your steps manually on the “get active” tab.
How to track your climb?
If you are challenging yourself to climb 80 flights of steps, you will track your steps on your own. We encourage you to post on social media to prove to your friends, family and donors that you conquered your challenge.

Where does it say our progress “to the moon”?
This year’s virtual Step Up for Kids theme is “to the moon”. As a community, we will complete 465 million steps or, enough to get to the moon! Because we are “boosting” our event step totals thanks to our corporate sponsors and donors, the overall “to the moon” step total will not show up in the app. However, it will show up on our Step Up for Kids homepage and will be emailed to participants every Friday in January.
What counts as a “step”?
There are six ways to count “steps” for our event’s progress “to the moon!”
- By Stepping! The app steps tracks automatically, or you can enter them manually.
- Our Step Up for Kids sponsors will “boost” your daily steps by multiplying them. You’ll receive an e-mail from “mission control” with details each week!
- For every team that is registered, we’ll receive a large chunk of steps.
- For every dollar raised in the event, we’ll receive 100 steps.
- For every donor to the event, we will receive 10,000 steps. So you can kick your feet up one whole day if you get one donor.
- And patients at Lurie Children’s will earn steps for our event when they complete various goals they may create with their care team these goals could be for walking around their hospital floor, sitting up, tying a shoe, or taking medication. They’re excited to help us get to the moon!
